Meet the board


Amy Christianson 

Amy is Trustee to Area 1 (Chico), living in Chico since 1985 when she began attending California State University Chico. She graduated with a Bachelors degree in Liberal Studies from CSU Chico and a Masters in Teaching and Learning with Technology from Ashford University in 2011. She is currently a member of the California After School Advisory representing rural after school programs and in the past has participated on advisory boards, steering committees, local boards and as a volunteer. Amy is the co-owner of a management consulting business and lives in Chico with her two children who attend Chico High, Jacob and Grace.


Amy sits on the California County Boards of Education [CCBE] Executive Board and will take office as the President for 2017.

Howard M. Ferguson
Long time Oroville residents, Howard and his wife DeAnna have raised four children here. They also proudly boast 7 awesome grandchildren. DeAnna is a graduate of Oroville High School as are all four children. The grandchildren are all graduates of, or are now attending, Butte County public schools. Howard graduated from Quincy High School in Plumas County and then Chico State with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a teaching credential. Later in life he achieved several other teaching credentials and also a Masters Degree in Special Education from Chico State.


After a successful 36 year career teaching special education at Oroville's Central Middle School Howard retired in 2006 and moved onto a 7 year career working for the state of California as a part-time teacher retirement (CalSTRS) benefits counselor.


Howard and DeAnna enjoy fishing and trips to the mountains, especially the Bucks Lake area. They also like to take local trips to Fort Bragg, Yosemite, and almost anywhere with the kids and/or grandkids. Howard takes an occasional fishing trip to British Columbia to a wilderness area which has special significance to his family.

Ryne Johnson
Ryne is Trustee to Area 1 (Chico). A Chico native, he attended public schools in Chico before completing his undergraduate studies at UCLA where he obtained a BA in International Economics. He then earned a Masters in Government Administration from the University of Pennsylvania. Ryne is a management consultant specializing in business strategy, finance, organizational structuring and privatization. He worked outside the area and abroad for many years before moving back to Chico in 2000. Ryne is married and the father of four children, Alexander, Noa, Eliette, and Arlo.

Brenda J. McLaughlin
Brenda is the Trustee of Area 4 (Biggs, Durham and Gridley). She has been on the Board of Education since June,1981. Brenda is married and has one son Noah. Brenda served as President for CCBE for the 1988-89 school year.

Jeannine MacKay
Jeannine is the Trustee of Area 3 (Paradise). She has been on the Board of Education since June, 2002. Jeannine has been involved in education for a number of years. She is married and has four children and two grandchildren.

Roger Steel
Roger is Trustee to Area 1 (Chico). Roger, a Pleasant Valley High School 1967 graduate, spent a year studying at UC Davis, majoring in pre-med. After a transfer to UC Berkeley, he switched majors and earned a degree in Conservation of Natural Resources, where he also earned his elementary teaching credential. His master's degree in education came while he was working in Lassen County and attending Chico State University. He has worked at Forest Ranch, John McManus, Chapman and Sierra View elementary schools, and became Superintendent/Principal at Gerber Union Elementary. Before retirement he was Superintendent of Nevada City School District. He retired in 2009 after being named Nevada County Superintendent of the Year in 2008-09. He is married to Suzanne, also a teacher, and they have two children, Barbara and Zachary.

Mike Walsh
Mike is a Trustee of Area 2 (Oroville). He, along with his three sons are graduates of Las Plumas High School. He and his wife are business owners and have worked in education since 1992. Mike is also currently completing his Master's degree in Organizational Management.
Mike sits on the California School Boards Association [CSBA] Executive Board and will take office as President-Elect for 2017.
