BCOE Afterschool Department to Change Its Name to Align to California State Vision

Over the past two years the California Department of Education’s After School Division (ASD) has been undergoing a number of exciting changes.  Their new director, Michael Funk, initiated a statewide strategic planning process that involved key stakeholders from all over California.  A copy of the new strategic plan A Vision for Expanded Learning in California can be found on the CDE website.

Along with a new strategic plan the Department of Education ASD also adopted a new vision that better depicts what is happening in the field as well as expanding the understanding of what simply used to be called Afterschool.

ASD Vision…"California’s Expanded Learning programs are an integral part of young people’s education, engaging them in year-round learning opportunities that prepare them for college, career, and life."

With that being said, the BCOE Afterschool Department will be changing its name to the Expanded Learning Department.  In addition to Afterschool programs in 11 Districts at 26 sites they also provide summer programs, sponsor large community events and have most recently started fee-based programming.  As you can see there is a lot more going on in the Afterschool Department than just after school.  Effective July 1, 2014, the Afterschool Department is changing its name to the Expanded Learning Department.

Keep your eyes open for exciting expanded learning opportunities from the Afterschool Department.  In the fall they will be opening a fee-based after school program at STREAM Charter, hosting the 3rd Annual Robotics Competition, hosting the 8th Annual Family Fun Day and representing Butte County at the Annual Pebble Beach First Tee Tournament of Champions.
