Food insecurity is the lack of access to enough food for an active, healthy life and limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods. Childhood food insecurity is devastating due to the increased vulnerability and the potential for long-term consequences. It impacts cognitive development among young children and is linked to poorer educational performances. The foundation for cognitive functioning is gained during early childhood, and can be greatly affected by food insecurity. Inadequate nutrition can permanently alter a child’s brain and stunt their intellectual capacity, which will affect the child’s learning, social interaction, and productivity.
