Child Development Programs & Services administers, coordinates and delivers early care and education programs to children and families, provides complementary support projects, partnerships, collaborative planning, and data collection and analysis in Butte County.    Informational brochure available. Children's Centers

Children's Center Collaborative
A collaborative partnership with E-Center Head Start program, provides  full day, full year child care and development services for income eligible children ages three to kindergarten entry.  The comprehensive program provides seamless, preschool opportunities to meet children's individual and identified needs, and offers specialized health and family support services.  Mariposa Children's Center, Table Mountain Children's Center, and South Oroville Children's Center are located in Chico and Oroville. 

State Preschool
High quality preschool experiences lead to academic and life success.  Quality services are characterized by individualized curriculum, learning and literacy activities supporting cooperative play, motor skill development, safety and nutrition.  The California Department of Education provides funds to support eight state preschools offering educational opportunities in Berry Creek, Chico, Gridley, Magalia, Oroville, and Paradise.  Programs support children's optimum growth and development and encourage school readiness and successful lifelong learning.  Programs are free to eligible families.

Child Development Programs

Butte County Local Child Care Planning Council
California Department of Education funding supports leadership by the County Office of Education and the County Board of Supervisors through the efforts and advisory capacity of the Butte County Local Planning Council (LPC).  The LPC plans and coordinates child care and development services through a collaborative effort of individuals, public agencies, and private organizations.  Its efforts promote affordable, available, accessible, high quality services to meet the diverse needs of Butte County children and families.  The resources and Council support complementary projects to promote provider capacity, inclusion activities and AB 212 Step Up project.

Child Development Professional Services
Child Development Professional Services provides information, resources, and supports related to professional development needs of early care and education workforce, and assists early childhood educators in competencies related to school readiness and early literacy supports.  Specific activities include college tuition and book reimbursement, online literacy college coursework, and coaching and mentoring.

Step Up Program
The Step Up program provides professional development opportunities and incentives to all state-subsidized teachers and providers in Butte County to promote workforce retention.  Professional development information, resources and other identified supports are provided through individual career advising and supports.  A leadership strand is offered, promoting excellence in the field of seasoned, experienced professionals.

School Readiness Program:
School readiness support is offered in five select school communities in the county through the implementation of the Raising a Reader program at several preschools.  In addition, an extended-day preschool program is supported at Bald Rock Children's Center at the Berry Creek Elementary School campus.  Funding is provided by Butte County Children and Families Commission and the California First Five Commission.  School Readiness Initiative

CARES:  Comprehensive Approaches to Raising Educational Standards
Butte County Children and Families Commission and the California First Five Commission fund the Butte County CARES Program, implemented in partnership with Valley Oak Children's Services, provides outreach, education and professional supports to early childhood education professionals to increase educational qualifications and workforce capacity.

Quick Meals Program
The Quick Meals program is a demonstration and education project for parents of preschoolers in five communities.  Parents receive interactive instruction, resources, and materials at preschool sites to encourage more healthy family food choices.  The program compares one-dish meals with the time, money, nutrition, and taste of fast food choices.  Funding for the project is provided by California Regional Nutrition Network Sierra-Cascade Region.

Sierra Cascade Nutrition and Activity Consortium (SCNAC)
Working with CSU, Chico, nutrition and physical fitness education, activities and resources are provided through children's preschool programs, including parent meetings, newsletters, and monthly activities.  Monthly interactive activities are provided to parents and teachers at trainings, schools, and community events.

Resources and Past Projects

Assessing Child Care Economics Needs and Transportation (ACCENT)
Proposition 10 mini-grant funding from the Butte County Children and Families Commission supports development of a needs assessment, economic impact report and transportation systems analysis related to child care development service delivery, compilation of data, planning, and marketing of child care in the work place.

Early LEARN - Literacy Education And Resource Network
Early LEARN, through a partnership with the Local Child Care Planning Council, enhances the learning opportunities of young children.  The latest research demonstrates that exposure to quality early experiences, including reading, math, music, language, and fine motor skills, promote future learning.  Funding through the Department of Health and Human Services, Child Care Bureau, supports child and family literacy based activities, increased access to early childhood education programs, staff professional development and mentoring, and retention activities.  Early LEARN works with Butte County early care and education programs and providers to offer activities encouraging literacy and reading.
