Early LEARN - Literacy Education And Resource Network

Research clearly shows that early learning opportunities may make a significant difference in children reaching their full potential.  What is learned early is - to a large extent - learned permanently, and becomes the foundation for all learning to follow.  Some skills, such as reading, math, music, language, and fine motor skills, are best learned early.

Early Childhood Education (ECE) professionals and parents have the opportunity to access this available information; but consequently, have the challenge of finding the time and resources to learn and apply this knowledge.  The Early LEARN (Literacy Education And Resource Network) program has been developed as a national model of professional development and family support to provide children with the literacy opportunities that will best prepare them for school and life success.

Program

The Early LEARN program has been designed to enhance children's early development and readiness for school.  The program has been developed by the Child Development Programs and Services division of Butte County Office of Education, in conjunction with the Butte County Local Child Care Planning Council.

Learning Environments

Early LEARN will foster dynamic early childhood learning environments in centers and homes by providing enriching printed materials through a lending library.  The library will house a variety of story books and child development books for young children, parents, and early childhood educators to borrow.

The program will also implement the renowned Raising a Reader program in which families can receive pertinent information on literacy education for their children, borrow books through a book bag program, and access local libraries.

Expanding Services

The Early LEARN program will allow many Early Care and Education sites throughout Butte County to increase access to existing programs by expanding the number of days children are served.  This extended instructional calendar will allow more quality instruction, as enhanced through literacy strategies, for young children.

Kindergarten Transition

Early education offers a foundation for children to be able to learn, to be interested in learning, and to have a positive attitude toward learning.  With this foundation a variety of Kindergarten skills can be taught to better prepare children to succeed in school.  In addition, Early LEARN will partner with schools, early childhood educators, and the Butte County School Readiness Program to offer transitional activities and information to children entering school.

Professional Development

Training in pre-literacy development will be offered to Early Childhood Educators to improve the quality of early learning programs throughout the county.  This opportunity will give educators access to the latest research and implementation strategies.  This training will be offered, with substantial financial incentives.

Early Literacy Certificate Program

Along with professional development incentives, Early Childhood Educators will have the opportunity to participate in an Early Literacy Certificate program.  Professionals will be able to earn up to six units of college credit.  For more information, please see our brochure. (pdf)

Raising A Reader Program

The Raising A Reader Program, through Butte County's Early LEARN program, offers tools for parents to help their children fall in love with reading.
