School Readiness

Children need support to be ready for school.  To succeed in school, children must enter Kindergarten with foundation of health and well-being.  Fortunately, there are activities, information and support to help families prepare their young children toward success.

The Butte County School Readiness Program is a network of agencies and services that have united for the specific purpose of helping families and children enter Kindergarten ready to learn and succeed.

Program

Kindergarten is an exciting place where children learn new social, physical, emotional and academic skills.  Today's schools have a structure and schedule that may be challenging.  The Butte County School Readiness Program was developed, to bring together services to support families, early care and education (ECE) providers, elementary schools, and service agencies to help children enter Kindergarten prepared and ready to succeed.

Kindergarten Transition

The transition to Kindergarten is a milestone in a child's life.  Children are preparing to enter school and schools are getting ready for children.  The School Readiness program coordinates elementary schools and teachers, ECE providers, service agencies, and families so that everyone is working together toward a common goal.  Kindergarten teachers and ECE providers partner to streamline children's learning, while service agencies provide resources so families feel valued and welcomed during the Kindergarten transition.

Early Care & Education Opportunities

The years from birth to age five are a time of extraordinary growth and learning.  Many children have the opportunity to develop knowledge, understanding, and interests while enrolled in an early care and education program.  Teachers in these programs are a vital component in preparing young children with the academic, social, and personal skills they will need to excel in school.  The School Readiness Program provides professional development for teachers to enhance training opportunities and experiences.

Healthy Children

Most children who are physically and emotionally healthy thrive in school.  Physical, dental, vision, and hearing screenings are important, as well as keeping immunizations up to date.  School Readiness staff and service partners coordinate to provide services to families.  Providing information and education to families about health insurance, basic nutrition, physical fitness and hygiene promotes a lifetime of health and well-being.

Family Support

Raising children is a challenging lifelong endeavor.  Parents are their child's first teacher.  There are many important skills children learn in their homes before entering Kindergarten, and parents are the key to this learning.  That's why the School Readiness program offers parents education, informational materials, and home visitation services for families, to support children's healthy development and readiness for school.

Learning In Family Environments - L.I.F.E.

The Butte County School Readiness Program is offering a no-cost program to help families get ready for kindergarten.  There is a lot to do to be prepared for school.  The School Readiness LIFE program offers activities and individualized support to help you know what you and your child can do to be prepared for that first day of school, and beyond!  Parents and guardians of any child aged two to five years old, who will enter kindergarten at one of the participating schools is eligible.  For more information, please see our brochure.
