Program Description:
DATA (Driving Achievement Through Assessment)  provides the professional development and technical assistance for classroom teachers, principals, assessment directors, and superintendents for the purpose of understanding, collecting, analyzing, and using formative and summative assessment results.

In partnership with BCOE’s instruction and professional development coordinators, BTSA, and external professional experts, DATA builds capacity in classroom teachers and administrators to use student assessment data to improve teaching and learning.  Building on past work with Dennis Fox, Mike Schmoker, Tom Guskey, and Rick Stiggins, in the 2007-08 school year we will work toward balancing district assessment systems, and will learn specific formative assessment strategies (based on the work of Dylan Wiliam and Marnie Thompson) that help teachers meet the needs of individual students and groups of students.  The monthly DATA Network meeting, now in its fifth year, guides teachers and principles in discussions of assessment and data related concerns and successes.

Program Goals:

  • Help teachers and administrators learn how to collect and manipulate student performance data using technology
  • Help teachers and administrators learn effective data analysis strategies and use the results to improve instruction
  • Help administrators infuse data-driven decision-making into the existing school structure
  • Strengthen the link between the classroom and before and afterschool programs
  • Build site level capacity to collect, analyze, and use student performance data
  • Help districts select technology to support data analysis
  • Support other BCOE programs in the capture and analysis of data
