Oroville Cares Coalition

Healthy Youth + Healthy Families = Healthy Communities

Coalition Overview The Oroville Cares Coalition is a community coalition serving the City of Oroville and the Oroville Union High School District area.  It addresses youth development, in support of academic success and community health.  The coalition is managed by Partners In Health and Safety, Butte County Office of Education (BCOE).  BCOE is the fiscal agent and provides supervision, grant writing leadership, technical training and office space.  The coalition was established to focus on youth development through prevention programs addressing youth violence and the underage use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.  It serves as the Safe and Drug Free School advisory board for                           Oroville Union High, Oroville City Elementary, Palermo Union and Thermalito Union                               School Districts.

Oroville Cares Coalition collects and analyzes data, identifies problems, maps local             resources and networks with other agencies, groups, schools, businesses, individuals,                  etc. to develop a plan for Oroville youth, and to share information about local resources related                    to partner agencies, community organizations, and schools.  Oroville Cares Coalition and its subcommittees assist in monitoring the implementation of activities that address positive Youth Development, Alcohol, Tobacco, and other Drug, Violence Prevention, and other health related  programs in community and schools.  Oroville Cares Coalition’s sub-committees include:                      (1) Coalition’s Steering Committee; (2) Networking; (3) Social Marketing; (4) Jobs 4 Youth;                 (5) Every 15 Minutes

Oroville Cares Coalition’s Vision:  In the greater Oroville area, our children and families                  are safe, healthy, educated, productive, and supported by collaborative comprehensive                          systems of prevention, early intervention and care services

Oroville Cares Coalition’s Goals:

Goal 1:

Establish and strengthen processes for resource sharing, coordination, and collaboration

Goal 2:

How to talk to Teens about Prescription Drug Use-     http://www.talkaboutrx.org/not_worth_the_risk.jsp

Your Life:
Drugs & Alcohol, School Life, Relationships

Sometimes your life will seem like it’s just one trouble after another. And those troubles usually fall somewhere under these categories. We know you probably have had plenty of lectures on the dangers of drugs and alcohol, but we think the following sites have some great feedback, because it’s from teens just like you.

As to school life, relationships, and just the angst of being a teen, check out:

Your Family:
Divorce, Domestic Violence, Sexual Abuse

Your Body:

  • Puberty-
There is nothing quite like adolescence to make you feel like you’re in a bad science fiction movie. Children’s bodies “morphing” into adulthood without much rhyme or reason, the term “growth spurt” tossed around while you stretch very quickly to 98% of your full adult height; waking up to find that you now have oily skin, secreting glands, and the new hair ….nice touch! Add the biochemical hormone hurricane, your parents freaking out, and it’s …well, like we said, like you’re in a bad movie. But the good news is, everyone else you know is in the movie, too, so you’re not alone. And, with a little help from this website, you’ll get to write some of the scripts and determine how some of the movie will end. ( Yes,  puberty will eventually end, we promise!)

  • Local Clinics

  • GirlPower.gov

  • Read about what women who have already gone through have to say.

Pregnancy:
It doesn’t get much tougher than this. It’s a lot easier to talk about would you should not do, than what you should do.

    • Don’t rush into a decision.

    • Don’t let your friends decide for you.

    • Don’t Decide Alone.

    • Don’t forget the adoption option.

    • Don’t depend on the teen father, no matter what he says.

Here are some local resources to help-

  • California Health Collaborative 3300 Spencer Oroville 534-1933

  • Caring for Women 2309 Lincoln St. 533-8388 Hotline: 532-9362

  • Crisis Pregnancy Center 2339 Lincoln St. Oroville  532-9362

Youth Employment Opportunities:

Butte County One-Stop offers a youth employment program designed to assist youth in search of employment.  For more information, you can contact one of the Resource Specialist’s at the Oroville One-Stop Center, 78 Table Mountain Blvd. at 538-7301.
