Program Description:
BCOE collaborates with teachers, schools and districts to provide professional development and technical assistance in implementing a standards-based, balanced mathematics program, as defined by the California Mathematics Framework.

Through analysis of data and other information about student performance, BCOE will work with schools to build their capacity in identifying their needs in order to refine instructional practices to improve student achievement. Using this analysis, combined with research into best instructional practices, BCOE can aid in the development and delivery of comprehensive professional development and support systems for improving student achievement in mathematics. This support may include coaching, consultation, data analysis, grade level/department meeting facilitation and workshops.

Program Goals:

  • Deepen teacher-content knowledge in mathematics

  • Aid teachers in understanding the content of their grade level standards, including the relationship of those standards to the state testing system

  • Provide support in transitioning from the current state content standards to the Common Core State Standards

  • Help teachers and administrators learn effective data analysis strategies and how to use the results to improve mathematics instruction

  • Increase teacher knowledge with regards to the use of formative assessment techniques to modify instruction to meet the needs of their students

  • Improve student performance through training and assistance to teachers, including the implementation of their adopted instructional materials

  • Provide resources to teachers to help them effectively teach the academically, culturally and linguistically diverse student populations in their classrooms

  • Facilitate the networking and articulation of teachers from different school sites/grade levels

  • Strengthen the link between the classroom and before and afterschool programs in order to support student achievement in mathematics
