Welcome to the Butte Reading Implementation Center, serving 14 Northern California counties; Butte, Del Norte, Glenn, Humboldt, Lake, Lassen, Mendocino, Modoc, Plumas, Shasta, Siskiyou, Sonoma, Tehama and Trinity.

Butte Reading Implementation Center focuses on student achievement in reading through quality professional development.

As part of SB 472 and the Reading First Professional Development Program, teachers learn how to effectively implement the new California state content standards using the California aligned curriculum framework and the State Board of Education or local Board (high schools) approved instructional materials. This program consists of a 40-hour institute with 80 hours of follow-up activities.

The Butte RIC offers:

  • 40-hour Summer Reading Institutes for:
  • *English Learner Professional Development (ELPD, K-6)
  • Open Court (K-6)
  • Houghton-Mifflin (K-6)

*Awaiting SBE approval for SB 472 funding

  • 80-hours of academic year follow-up support for the district to develop activities focused on the state board adopted instructional materials, including:
  • Guidelines for grade level meetings including student assessment analysis and meeting record keeping documentation
  • On-line professional development
  • Special events
  • Coordinate the selection and assignment of institute instructors to ensure quality, consistency, and coherence to guidelines
  • Offer access to graduate extension coursework for institute participants who choose to enroll for credit
  • Manage all logistical arrangements for the institutes, i.e. parking, food services, location
  • Assist in management and file preparation for stipend verification
  • Meet all the reporting requirements
  • Serve as liaison to districts to provide recruitment information
  • Provide follow-up with regular communications with participating LEAs
  • Assist in utilization of the registration system for LEAs’ teachers and administrators
  • Coordinate delivery of all materials to and from institute sites
  • Assist with fiscal and narrative reports as required
  • Provide internal program evaluation

Our Butte RIC seeks to improve student achievement in reading through these components of a quality program:

  • A comprehensive, consolidated professional development program built around a district-wide commitment to reading
  • A content focus grounded in the California Content Standards, the Framework, and Adopted Instructional Programs
  • A content focus on assessment and accountability systems, at all levels
  • A commitment to leverage university, county and district resources to enable teachers to deliver a high quality and cohesive instructional program to all students

Butte RIC Program Goals

  • To promote collaboration, communication and coordination between and among all north state partners: our universities, our county offices, our districts and other professional development providers in order to better serve our students
     
  • To provide the highest quality professional development program for all participating administrators, teachers and paraprofessionals—that is firmly grounded in the state’s content standards and framework as well as the adopted student instructional materials for Reading/Language Arts
     
  • To meet the professional development needs of our participants in order to better meet the needs of the students in our region
     
  • To assist the participating districts in the collecting and sharing of grade level data at school and district levels as necessary to determine next best instructional steps and program development plans
     
  • To maintain a rigorous evaluation system that examines student achievement in reading/language arts to determine effectiveness
