BCOE is proud to house one of the Technical Assistance Centers established as part of California’s Reading First plan. [Please check this link to read California’s application: http://www.cde.ca.gov/nclb/sr/rf/]  Under California’s Reading First grant application, these regional centers were established to provide the necessary local support for districts awarded Reading First grants. The Butte R-TAC currently serves these fourteen northern California counties: Butte, Del Norte, Glenn, Humboldt, Lake, Lassen, Mendocino, Modoc, Plumas, Shasta, Siskiyou, Sonoma, Tehama, and

Trinity. There are R-TACs established in these counties as well: Alameda, Santa Barbara, San Bernardino, Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Joaquin with Sacramento County 1serving as the C-TAC or California’s Technical Assistance Center.

To date nine districts in the Butte R-TAC have received approval of their grant proposals in this competitive grant process: Del Norte County Unified (Del Norte), Roseland Elementary School District (Sonoma), Johnstonville Elementary School District (Lassen), Junction City Elementary School District (Trinity), Arena (Mendocino), Corning (Tehama), Konocti (Lake), Lewiston (Shasta), Santa Rosa (Sonoma), Healdsburg (Sonoma), and Round Valley (Mendocino).

A key focus of the Reading First plan is the full implementation of the approved reading/language arts program. With this focus the Butte R-TAC works closely with the Butte RIC and other approved SB 472 and AB 430 providers to bring quality professional development linked directly to both the Open Court and Houghton Mifflin reading programs. Butte R-TAC provides to Reading First districts the necessary support to fully implement these programs. This support includes coaching, consulting, data collection and analysis and other supportive mechanisms all aimed at increasing student achievement in reading for grades K through 3.

Butte R-TAC is part of California’s Reading First plan. California’s Reading First is part of the federal government No Child Left Behind initiative. For more information please see: http://www.ed.gov/offices/OESE/readingfirst/
