What is Academic Decathlon

Butte County Office of Education annually hosts the Butte County Academic Decathlon.  The Academic Decathlon is a team competition in academics for high school students in grades nine through twelve.  Academic Decathletes compete in teams of six to nine students and involves students of all levels of academic achievement; to ensure that the program is inclusive of students of varying ability levels,   Students will take a series of tests in the subjects of language & literature, math, art, music, science, written super quiz, essay, speech, interview and economics.  The competition will end with an oral Super Quiz, a fast-paced question and answer relay.
Teams are usually made up of 9 high school students, 3 from each academic category based on grade-point averages
          Honor                   (3.75-4.0 GPA)
          Scholastic            (3.0-3.74 GPA)
          Varsity                 (0.0-2.99 GPA)
It is required that each team include at least two “A,” or “honors” students; two “B,” or “scholastic” students; and two “C” and below, or “varsity” students.
Decathletes are announced and awarded medals, plaques, and trophies following the competition to celebrate the Decathlete’s academic achievement.
Medals are given to first, second and third place winners in each of the 10 academic areas assessed, for each of the categories of Honor, Scholastic, and Varsity.  Second and third place schools receive recognition.  And the first place school is awarded the perpetual trophy and represents Butte County in the State Decathlon.
