Superintendent's MessageThe motto of the Butte County Office of Education is "Where children come first." The children we serve are, and will remain, our first priority. We believe that each child is entitled to a high quality educational program provided by highly qualified staff in a safe and caring learning environment. We are primarily a service agency. The goal of each program we offer is to improve the quality of learning for young people. We strive to accomplish this through leadership and by offering a wide variety of student-centered services and programs. Our office works closely with our 14 local school districts in serving over 33,000 students in Butte County. In addition, we serve as the lead agency for a number of regional initiatives serving multiple counties in Northern California. We also provide two unique statewide programs. The office of the Butte County Superintendent of Schools was originally established in 1920. Since that time, the roles and responsibilities have changed significantly. Today, we serve as the intermediary agency between the state and our local school districts. We partner with community based organizations, governmental agencies, and other educational agencies to offer a wide range of services. Superintendent's Responsibilities The Superintendent keeps the Board of Education informed of the status of educational programs and budgets and guides the Board in compliance with the various requirements of State and Federal law. The Superintendent encourages the residents of Butte County to involve themselves in the educational affairs of the county as well as the resident's school district. The Superintendent welcomes input from members of the community. The Superintendent encourages parents and constituents to visit the Butte County District Schools within the following regulations: 1. Register in the school office upon arrival. Members of the community are encouraged to address their compliments or complaints to the Superintendent of Schools. When contacting the Superintendent, calls may be re-addressed to specific Assistant Superintendents in charge of particular departments or programs or to local school district administration.
