After School Tutorial –
Where there is an identified need and interest by the school,
after school tutorial programs have been offered to migrant
students most in need. Many of these are in collaboration with
schools and are staffed by district teachers who are partially
contracted or reimbursed by Migrant Education.
Jump Start - Modeled after the Reading Recovery program, this allows more flexibility by providing small group instruction in reading methodologies which can be conducted by a trained paraprofessional or a district teacher paid to provide after school instruction with migrant funding. Enrichment Activities – These include a variety of activities which enrich the migrant students experiences. These may include self-esteem activities, outdoor education, ropes initiatives or other activities that expand on the migrant student's experiences. Many are initiated by district staff through funding made available for unique needs upon request. YRE Intersession & Summer School Programs – In collaboration with school districts, migrant students receive services during summer school which focus on strengthening academic areas. Most of these are four to six week programs. For schools with year round education, migrant students may receive additional services during their intersession. Continuous Learning Programs (CLP) - Students who do not attend summer school programs are encouraged to participate in a program designed to keep them engaged in learning by working on specially designed learning packages while receiving one on one assistance from migrant staff on a weekly basis. The learning packages are designed to address different academic levels as well as several subject areas. Academic, Career & Personal Counseling – At the secondary level (7-12) Secondary Schools Advisors (SSA) hired by the Migrant Education program and in collaboration with the school counselors, provide one on one or small group services to migrant students. These include but are not limited to academic, career and personal counseling. In addition, at CSU Sonoma, a Migrant Education Advisor Program (MEAP) was developed to provide counselor interns. Leadership & Higher Education Conferences and Activities – Migrant students are provided experiences which focus on leadership skills and higher education options. Many of these are planned at the school, district, or area level and are conducted in collaboration with a college or university. College experiences and career awareness are also a focus at these conferences. Secondary Leadership Conference – During the summer, 110 promising secondary migrant students from throughout the Region are selected to participate in a week long leadership conference which takes place at Stanford University. Students participate in activities, which reinforce their leadership potential and provide opportunities to develop skills. In addition to this annual event, each area provides local leadership conferences at local colleges and universities. Work Study/Experience – Based on an assessment of dropout potential and on a limited basis, work-study is provided to migrant students who might otherwise drop out of school. The Secondary School Advisor seeks job sites and experiences, which will benefit the migrant student. For More Information
