Academic Home Visits – These are visits to the home (sometimes they may take place at a school) which are intended to provide the parents and the student with information regarding progress at school, academic requirements, grading system, graduation requirements, college information including requirements etc.  The purpose is to provide one on one information in a non-threatening environment and allowing for questions which may not occur in a large parent meeting.

Parent Advisory Council Meetings - Program Coordinators oversee the parent component.  They are responsible for insuring that minimums of six parent advisory council meetings are held and that the required topics and information are shared at these meetings.  They ensure that elections are held and that parents are involved in program planning and evaluation as well as in the development of the service agreement.

School Visitations -  Program Coordinator organizes school visitations so that parents can visit the school and become acquainted with the school staff while learning about the school system and programs available within the school.  In many cases this leads to parents feeling more comfortable and visiting the schools more often and also supporting their children by providing encouragement and assistance with their homework.

Self-Advocacy – Much of the training provided to parents is for the purpose of giving them the information and tools they need so that they can advocate for themselves and their children without always relying on program staff.

Training in Various Relevant Topics – Trainings are provided at school, district, area, and regional levels on various topics based on current trends and on needs assessments conducted annually.  Among the most current topics have been standards and assessment, Proposition 227 implications, Improving America Schools Act, and School wide.

State Parent Conference - Annually, approximately 30 migrant parents from throughout the Region are selected to participate in the annual state conference in Los Angeles which is organized by the Migrant Education Program.  They are provided workshops on leadership skills as well as programmatic information that will help as advocates for their children.

Parent/Teacher Conferencing – Staff assists during parent/teacher conferencing to serve as translator/interpreter as well as an advocate.  In addition, training is provided to parents on what to ask during these conferences and what some of the information that may be discussed means e.g. below grade level, NCE etc.

Translation/Interpreting – Staff assist parents in translation/interpreting in many different situations.  Some based on district request, others from parent requests.
