Certified Phlebotomy Technician 

Course Description
Students will learn to draw blood specimens from patients as requested by hospitals and referring physicians. Students will follow infection control principles and regulations, complete skin punctures from a variety of patient populations including pediatric and geriatric patients. Students will learn to provide post puncture care, process blood containers after collection and demonstrate proper safety and infection control measures. The curriculum prepares students to meet the state criteria for examination as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician.

  • California phlebotomy regulations
  • Advanced infection control principles & regulations
  • Anatomy, physiology and medical terminology relevant to phlebotomy
  • Anatomical site selection
  • Methods of venipuncture
  • Capillary and arterial blood collection
  • Special collection/handling techniques
  • Quality assurance/quality control
  • Safety/ethics/professionalism in the workplace
  • Communication skills/interpersonal relationships
  • Lab practice blood draws: completion of 50 successful venipunctures & 10 skin punctures during a 40-80 hour non-paid internship

Location: Chico ROP Center

Duration:

The length of course is approximately 3 months.

Certified Phlebotomy Technician consists of 3 parts:

Part A - Thirty hours of classroom instruction.

Part B - Community Classroom in an approved lab where students will complete 40-80 hours of training and complete 50 successful venipunctures and 10 successful skin punctures.

Part C - Twenty-four hours of classroom instruction. The curriculum will include infection control, universal precautions, anatomy and physiology of the body systems with emphasis on circulatory systems, skin preparation and various punctures, laboratory test, terminology, specimen handling and age specific patient needs. This class prepares students to meet the state criteria for certification.
