Las Plumas High School Wins Butte County Academic Decathlon

OROVILLE — Oroville Union High School District's (OUHSD) Las Plumas High
School won the 2020 Butte County Academic Decathlon held Saturday, February 1.
The team scored 35,317.50 points, earning the school the county title this year!

Teams are comprised of three divisions; Honor students (3.75 and above GPA), Scholastic students (3.00‐3.74 GPA), Varsity students (2.99 GPA and below).  Students compete against other students in the same grade point category, with bronze, silver, and gold medals being awarded for each of the 10 events.

In all, 53 students representing 4 high school teams from Butte County competed in this year’s Academic Decathlon including Inspire School of Arts and Sciences, Las Plumas High School, Oroville High School, and Paradise High School. 

The winning team includes Madison McCallough, Halle Hemberry and Hailey Gramps in the Honors Division;  Catelyn McCardle, Ashley Wright and Chloe Bryant in the Scholastic Division; and Cyan Vang, Lisa Kelley and Andrew Sproles in the Varsity Division. Alternate(s) include: Alia Bruce, Emily Morrison, Noah Brown, Nathan Goitia, and Noah Ruiz. The team was coached by Christian Bruce.

Las Plumas High School will represent Butte County and pursue a state title at the California State Academic Decathlon, March 27-28, 2020, in Sacramento, California.

Coming in second place was Paradise High School. 

Honor Students Include; Annika Presentati, Gregory Schofield, Johnathan Szwarc; Briana Clark, Ayla Kirby, and Jay Gibney in Scholastic Division; Luka Bremner, Katie Elder, and Zachary Taylor in Varsity Division. Alternate(s) include: Jordan Franke. Students were coached by Jori Krulder. 

Third place was awarded to Inspire School of Arts and Sciences. Honor Students Include; William Hartman, Emma Garrahy, and Jillian Johnsen; Riley Snodgrass, Miranda Taylor, and Ariana Powell in Scholastic Division; Jasmine Neel, Nicholas Pegg, and Matthew Beale in Varsity Division. Students were coached by Theron Hopkins. 

Oroville High School students include: Rosie Yang, Pa Ying Yang, and Julienne Trinidad on the Honors Division; Hope Vang, Avalon Vang, and Oua Yang on Scholastic Division; Lantana Kimbler, Princess Yang, and Nicole David on Varsity. Alternate(s) include: Lawjay Lee and Kongmeng Yang. Students were coached by Samantha Muntifering. 


A big thank you to all the students who participated and gave their best shot.  Academic Decathlon wouldn't be complete without all of the students!
