"We’re looking forward to a day filled with fun, friendship, competition and camaraderie! The community really shows up to put on an epic and memory filled event” -- Cami Anderson, event co-coordinator.
The Butte County Adapted Physical Education Specialists, in coordination with Butte County Office of Education and Kiwanis of Oroville, will hold its annual School Site Track and Field Meet from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, May 4, 2018 at Harrison Stadium in Oroville, CA. Approximately 630 students with special needs, Kindergarten to age 22, from Butte and Nevada Counties are expected to participate in the event. The student athletes, peer buddies, and volunteers have an amazing day of competition, community, and camaraderie. Athletes have been known to ask when the event is starting in the Fall when they return to school!! One participant recently shared "I like the running because I get to race people and meet new friends."
The track meet is an annual collaborative event and doubles as a service learning opportunity for students attending local middle schools, high schools, Butte College and Chico State, to work with students with disabilities in an athletic and active environment. The track meet is staff by trained volunteers and coaches, peer buddies from Butte County schools, community volunteers, faculty and students from Chico State and Butte College, as well as athlete families and friends. “This event is like state championships for participants and one of the most rewarding events to volunteer for,” says Butte County Office of Education Superintendent Tim Taylor. “This is the best sporting event of the year in Butte County.”
The Butte County Office of Education School Site Track and Field Meet is free of charge for all participants thanks to the generous donations and support of Butte County Office of Education, Kiwanis of Oroville, Special Olympics Butte County, National Charities League, and the fundraising efforts of the Disability Sport and Recreation Fund through North Valley Community Foundation.
