About Us

About Us

Champion Scholars is a mentoring program for foster teens throughout Butte County. What makes our program unique are our mentors. As college students and former foster youth, our mentors have a unique perspective and understanding of what their mentees are dealing with at home, at school, and socially. Champion Scholars help foster teens get to high school graduation and on a path to their own success.
How does a student obtain a mentor?

How does a student obtain a mentor?

To be eligible, the student must currently be in foster care in Butte County. A student can be referred by a teacher, social worker, foster parent, or the student themselves. If we have a mentor at their school or one nearby, we will work to get your student matched. If no mentor is available, we will put your student on a waitlist and keep you updated.

Apply online or contact Eilene Franco-Brooks at (530) 879-7472 for more information.
What Our Program Offers

What Our Program Offers

We meet our mentees where they are. We recognize that each person has different needs and strengths. We work with students to develop individualized plans to help the student become successful in school and in life by giving them the tools for learning to be their own best advocate.

We are using an evidence-based Check and Connect model which include these four core components:

The Mentor – relationship building
Check” - monitoring forms
Connect” - individualized interventions
Caregiver Engagement – connect, partner, and engage

Additionally, we have quarterly group events for fun and bonding.

“This program is very important to me. It has changed my life. Before I started this program I had given up on relationships and stopped trusting people. Because of this program I have formed a bond that cannot be broken.”
